Printing several colors or materials on one part has become the headline feature of 2026. But behind the word "multicolor" hide radically different architectures, with opposite trade-offs on waste, speed, price and flexibility. This guide lays them out to help you understand what you're actually buying.

The real divide: one nozzle (which must purge on every change) vs multiple tools (each material has its own nozzle, so little or no purge). Everything else follows from that.

Why multi-material

Three uses drive multi-tool printing:

  • Aesthetic multicolor: logos, patterns, decorative parts.
  • Soluble supports: a dedicated material (PVA/BVOH) that dissolves, for otherwise impossible geometries.
  • Functional dual-material: combining rigid + flexible, or different colors/hardness in one part.

Single-nozzle + multiplexer

The most common and cheapest approach: one nozzle, fed in turn by several spools via a box. On each change, the nozzle purges the old color — hence 15 to 40% waste depending on the part. This is the territory of Bambu's AMS, Creality's CFS and Prusa's MMU3 on the Core One.

For: affordable, up to 16 colors, dry storage (AMS 2 Pro/CFS). Against: waste and slow changes. Details in our multicolor guide.

Dual nozzle & IDEX

Two two-nozzle families, without a multiplexer — so little purge, but limited to two materials.

Dual nozzle (shared toolhead)

  • Two direct-drive nozzles with auto-lift: the inactive nozzle lifts while the other prints; both are fully capable. Example: the Bambu H2D.
  • Direct-drive + Bowden: a fast main nozzle + a secondary one (often dedicated to support). Example: the Bambu X2D.

IDEX (independent carriages)

True IDEX (Independent Dual EXtruder) puts two heads on independent carriages that move separately. Beyond clean soluble supports and dual-material, it unlocks duplication and mirror modes (two parts printed in parallel). Examples: RatRig V-Core 4.1 (kit, IDEX option), the Sovol SV04, or the BCN3D Sigma/Epsilon (professional). Toolchangers

The top tier: N complete heads (hotend + nozzle), parked in docks, swapped by a mechanism. Since each material keeps its own nozzle, waste is near zero and you can mix very different nozzles and materials.

  • Prusa XL — up to 5 heads, large format, segmented bed.
  • Snapmaker U1 — 4 heads (SnapSwap), ~5 s, under $1,000.
  • Prusa INDX — toolchanger with up to 8 nozzles for the Core One (Prusa × Bondtech).
  • Bambu H2C — one fixed extruder + swappable hotends (up to 7 materials), a "near-toolchanger" variant.
  • Sovol M1D — the hybrid: an IDEX carriage that also swaps between 6 docked heads (7 materials, copy and mirror modes). Announced, not shipped.
  • Creality KliTek — a 4-head nozzle-changing system (~5 s, mixed nozzle sizes), announced for the upcoming K3 (late 2026).

For: clean, fast, flexible. Against: price, footprint, mechanical complexity.

What's next?

The 2026 trend is clear: the toolchanger is moving downmarket. The Snapmaker U1 proved the market's appetite (the most-funded project ever); the INDX adds 8 tools to an existing Core One; the Prusa XL is preparing new toolheads (including one for liquid silicone); Creality is bringing its own nozzle-changer, KliTek, on the upcoming K3; and Sovol is crowdfunding the M1D, which bolts a 6-head changer onto an IDEX frame. Watch for: more affordable toolchangers, specialized heads (liquid materials, precision deposition), and tighter slicer-hardware integration to further cut single-nozzle waste.

Which to choose?

  • Occasional color, small budget → single-nozzle + AMS/CFS (Bambu, Creality). Accept the purge.
  • Soluble supports / dual-material → dual nozzle (H2D, X2D) or IDEX (RatRig V-Core, Sovol SV04).
  • Clean & fast multicolor, contained budget → affordable toolchanger (Snapmaker U1).
  • Most versatile / waste-free → high-end toolchanger (Prusa XL, or Core One + INDX).
