The Prusa XL is Prusa's large printer and one of the few true consumer toolchangers: instead of one nozzle swapping filament by purging, it has multiple complete toolheads that an arm picks up and docks. The result: multi-material and multicolor with very little waste, and the ability to combine different nozzles and materials on the same part.

The 5-toolhead changer

This is the heart of the XL. Each toolhead is a complete hotend (heatbreak + nozzle), parked in a dock. A mechanism fetches the right head, grabs and locks it in moments, then prints. Decisive advantages over a single-nozzle system (AMS, CFS, MMU3):

  • Almost no purge: no filament change in a single nozzle, so almost no waste.
  • Real combinations: different nozzle diameters, or very different materials (rigid + soluble, rigid + flexible) on the same print.
  • Cold idle heads: you can switch off the heat on unused toolheads.

Prusa keeps expanding the range: new toolheads are planned for 2026, including a plug-and-play one for liquid materials (heat-resistant silicone).

Segmented bed

The XL uses a bed split into independently heated tiles. This lets it heat only the useful zone, improve thermal uniformity over a large surface, and make long prints more reliable. Combined with Prusa precision (load cell), you get edge-to-edge flatness that's hard to match on such a large format.

Limits

  • High price: especially in 5-toolhead form — it's an investment, despite the 2026 cut.
  • Footprint & weight: a large machine, needs a dedicated spot.
  • Mechanical complexity: more moving parts (docks, heads) = more maintenance than a single nozzle.
  • Swap speed: excellent, but stacking colors is still slower than single-color.

Who's it for?

The XL is for those who want the cleanest multi-material (soluble supports, rigid/flexible combos) and a quality large volume — workshops, engineering, careful production.
