The pattern is clear: no kit for Bambu nor for closed Crealitys. The playground is open-source — where the firmware (Klipper especially) and the open frame let you add an axis.

Price & install difficulty

The kit price is only part of it. The real cost = kit + base machine + your time. A telling example: a RatRig / Voron CoreXY (≈ $1,000 – 1,400 as a kit) + the IDEX add-on (≈ $350 – 450) → a setup around $1,400 – 1,900, self-built.

On the install side, let's be honest — nothing is "plug-and-play":

  • Firmware: Klipper (or Marlin) configuration for the second extruder and the duplication/mirror modes.
  • Calibration: the crux — aligning the two nozzles' X/Y/Z offsets and matching their height. This is what makes (or breaks) an IDEX.

Who's it for?

An IDEX add-on is for the maker who already owns an open machine (RatRig, Voron, older Ender/CR-10) and wants true dual extrusion without rebuying a printer. If you're starting from scratch and want IDEX without tinkering, get a native one: the Sovol SV04 (≈ $600). And if your real need is multicolor, an AMS/CFS system is simpler.
