The A1 is Bambu Lab's large open-frame bed slinger: a Cartesian moving-bed printer that's simple, quiet and beautifully finished. It aims at one thing — that it just works the first time, multicolor included — and does it better than almost anything at its price. It's not a technical-materials machine, but for PLA, PETG and everyday printing, it's a benchmark.
In the Bambu lineup, the A1 sits above the A1 mini (bigger, hotter bed) and below the enclosed CoreXY machines (P1S, X2D). Open frame = no chamber, so no ABS/ASA in good conditions.
In brief
Released in late 2023 and still on sale in 2026, the A1 has few rivals for simplicity/quality/price. It auto-calibrates everything before each print (bed level, Z-offset, resonance, pressure advance), runs around 49 dB, and accepts the AMS Lite for four colors. All for ≈ $299 alone, ≈ $399 as a Combo with the AMS Lite.

Strengths

Limits
- No chamber: open frame → PLA/PETG/TPU. ABS/ASA warps, despite the 100 °C bed.
- Bed slinger: the bed moves in Y; at very high speed on tall parts, it trails a CoreXY for stability.

Early A1 units (2024) were subject to a heatbed cable recall in the US, since fixed. Machines sold today are not affected.
AMS Lite & multicolor
The A1 pairs with the AMS Lite, an open four-spool feeder placed beside or on top of the machine. RFID recognition of Bambu spools, auto-relay, and the option to go beyond four colors by combining units. Note: since the AMS Lite is open (no drying), it suits PLA/PETG best; for moisture-sensitive materials, plan dry storage (see the humidity guide).
And like any single-nozzle solution, every color change purges filament: expect 15–40% waste depending on the part. Bambu Studio can purge into infill or a sacrificial object to limit the loss.
Who's it for?
The A1 is the default pick for getting serious or for a quiet second machine dedicated to PLA/PETG in color. If you want smaller/cheaper, look at the A1 mini; if you need ABS, ASA or composites, step up to an enclosed machine (P1S and beyond) — all detailed in our Bambu Lab lineup guide.
